X.400 CONNECTIVITY FOR HP DESK The following position paper was created to help HP Sales Teams understand the various options availble in connecting HP Desk to X.400 and explains which option to use when. There are two possible solutions for providing X.400 connectivity for HP Desk users: OPTTION 1 HP 3000 HP 9000 +---------------+ +----------+ | |-------------| OpenMail | | HP DESK | |----------| | | | HP X.400 | +---------------+ +----------+ | To X.400 OPTION 2 HP 3000 HP 9000 +---------------+ +----------+ | HP Desk | | | |---------------| | HP X.400 | | X.400/HP Desk |-------------| | +---------------+ +----------+ | To X.400 In the first solution, HP Desk X.400-bound messages to OpenMail which then passes them to HP X.400. HP X.400/HP Desk is not required in this solution. In the second solution, HP X.400/HP Desk extracts X.400- bound messages from HP Desk and passes them to HP X.400. OpenMail is not required in this solution. Which solution is best? HP's long-term strategy is towards OpenMail. All future development (in particular, 1988 X.400 functionality) will be done on OpenMail. For this reason, we recommend that new X.400 customers should use Openmail. However, at this time the current versions of HP X.400/HP Desk (B.01.00) and OpenMail (A.00.01) are not the same. For this reason, we have outlined the major differences between these two options: The following are the benefits of using OpenMail as a gateway between Desk and X.400: * OpenMail is the strategic direction for an HP Desk to X.400 gateway solution. * Using OpenMail as the gateway between X.400 and HP Desk is less expensive to implement. OpenMail costs only $1200 while the HP X.400/HP Desk software ranges from $4,000 to $20,000. * OpenMail supports end-to-end delivery reports and read acknowledgements. * OpenMail supports ALL mandatory X.400 service elements. OpenMail was designed with X.400 in mind so it can be implemented and expanded to take advantage of X.400 services. The services that can be provided between HP Desk and X.400 are limited only to the services provided by HP Desk. (Note: OpenMail provides more X.400 services than X.400/HP Desk such as T.61 string bodypart generation and full support of X.400 acknowledgements.) * Extensive interoperability has been done with OpenMail and HP X.400. * OpenMail (version A.00.01) is 1984 X.400 conformant, both to NIST and COS requirements. * Future OpenMail releases will provide 1988 X.400 services. * Faster extraction of messages from HP Desk because less processing is done on the MPE node. This also results in less MPE system resources being used. * No additional software is required on the MPE side since HP Desk/OpenMail connectivity is part of the HP Desk product. This means that less X.400 expertise is required by the HP Desk Administrator since the OpenMail node is treated as an extension of the HP Desk network. In summary, the best solution depends on the customer's current and future needs. If the customer wants to be able to use 1988 X.400 features in the future, OpenMail is the best solution. If the customer is satisfied with the current X.400 functionality or does want to purchase another e-mail package (OpenMail), then X.400/HP Desk may be the best solution. Remember that OpenMail is HP's long-term strategic direction for HP Desk to X.400 connectivity. Below are additional features of HP X.400/HP Desk that are not currently in OpenMail: * X.400/HP Desk allows the administrator to configure which X.400 O/R address field(s) to store HP Desk location, sublocation, and FSC information. X.400/HP Desk can map HP Desk address fields to a combination of X.400 O/R address fields, namely PRMD, Organizational Name, and Organizational Units. OpenMail can only map/store HP Desk location and sublocation (not FSC) to the fixed Organizational Units. * Multiple HP Desk nodes can communicate with a single HP X.400 node using X.400/HP Desk while only one HP Desk node can communicate with a single OpenMail/X.400 node using A.00.01 OpenMail. * Stamping of the originator's X.400 address is done by HP X.400/HP Desk at the HP X.400/HP Desk node. Therefore, users on HP X.400/HP Desk Node1 can have a different Country Name, ADMD, PRMD, and Organization Name than users on HP X.400/HP Desk Node2. This is not applicable to OpenMail since it supports only one HP Desk connection (i.e., all HP Desk users will have the same Country/ADMD/PRMD/Organization Name. * X.400/HP Desk allows the administrator to map HP Desk location/sublocation into a set of X.400 O/R address fields via ``template'' configuration. For example, Fred Bloggs/IBM could be mapped to Bloggs,Fred/Marketing,Technical/IBM/US/TELEMAIL/IBM_PRMD if ``IBM'', the HP Desk location, ismapped to ``/Marketing,Technical/IBM/US/TELEMAIL/IBM_PRMD.'' (Note: This feature only applies to outgoing messages from HP Desk to X.400.) OpenMail does not provide this functionality.
